Advocacy Meeting with Deputy Commissioner Anantnag for Redressel of Grievances of persons with Disabilities

On 10th of May 2012, a high level meeting of officers of District Anantnag was called on by the Deputy Commissioner Anantnag for the redressal of grievances of persons with Disabilities of the district. The deputy commissioner had summoned the Chief Education officer Anantnag, District Social Welfare officer Anantnag; Executive Engineer Public works Department, Chief Medical officer Anantnag and Medical Superintendent Anantnag. In the meeting Worthy Chairman of our Organization was also invited to discuss problems faced by the persons with disabilities in District Anantnag. The main issues discussed were the issues of Access, Disability certificates issuance mechanism, Education of children with special needs and the livelihood generation of persons with disabilities. The meeting was called because the day before Deputy Commissioner had personally interacted with persons with disabilities in the inaugural ceremony of the Physical Rehabilitation centre at Humanity Welfare organization Helpline Bijbehara. On spot directions were given to all the officers to create more accessibility in their offices and ensure that the disable persons are given equal opportunities and full participation of them is made possible. The following issues were discussed by the worthy Chairman of our Organization:

  • Issuance of Fake disability certificates should be checked.
  • The assessment of the persons with disabilities should be done at ground floor.
  • The ramps should be introduced at entry points.
  • Defunct rehabilitation centre at District hospital should be reinstated in the district hospital.
  • The pending cases of Integrated Social Security schemes should be covered on priority.
  • The census of children with special needs should be done on priority, So that the complete educational plan for CWSN is formulated in the district.
  • A resource centre for all types of persons with disabilities should be established in the district so that all children with special needs [CWSN] are motivated to seek education.
  • The livelihood generation for youth with disabilities was discussed with greater importance.
