Awareness cum distribution camp at Zaiba Aapa School

On 13th of June 2018 an awareness cum distribution camp was organized by Humanity Welfare Organization HELPline in collaboration with Composite Regional center for persons with disabilities Srinagar Kashmir. The objectives of the camp were to distribute aids and appliances among the severe persons with disabilities at the nearest place from their residence. Humanity Welfare organization Helpline approached Director CRC Srinagar to provide the aids and appliances like wheelchair, Hearing aids, crutches, so that the severe disable people will seek maximization in their mobility and communication. Around 30 persons with severe disabilities were given free aids and appliances. A team of professionals including physiotherapists, speech therapist and Prosthetic and orthotic expert from CRC Srinagar under leadership of its Rehabilitation officer assessed the persons with disabilities and issued onspot aids and appliances among severe disable persons belonging to far flung areas of south Kashmir districts Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopion and Pulwama. The benificaries included the severe disable persons dependent on their children and few of them on old-aged parents were in odd positions and bed ridden for years having no wheelchairs available. Humanity Welfare organization HELPline had earlier identified these persons with disabilities during outreach programmes and facilitated them to reach the venue today in order to get the aids and appliances. Few oldaged persons were facing problems in hearing and were facing insecurity while roaming around independently in busy places. After receiving the aids and appliances the persons with disabilities were satisfied and thanked Humanity Welfare Organisation HELPline Bijbehara for easing out the mechanism of seeking the aids and appliances.

In second session an awareness programme regarding disability rights and services available at composite regional center Srinagar for the empowerment of persons with disabilities was conducted among ASHA workers, social workers and child-line members. Rehabilitation officer CRC Srinagar Kashmir Mr Shameem Ahmad Sofi welcomed the ordiance and discussed aims and objectives of CRC and the programmes and schemes available for the empowerment of persons with disabilities. He sensitized the participants how to identify youth with disabilities at grass root level and how to link them with loan schemes under National Handicapped Finance Development Corporation Schemes. He was of the view that youth with disabilities should choose entrepreneurship than wasting time in hunting for jobs.

Speech Therapist CRC Bemina Srinagar gave awareness about the ADIP scheme available with CRC Srinagar. He gave details about the procedure of getting hassle free aids and appliances from CRC. He also discussed the eligibility of persons with hearing and speech disabilities to seek hearing aids from CRC Srinagar.

The Physiotherapist of CRC Srinagar discussed the causes of orthopedic disabilities and the preventive measures. She discussed the availability prosthetic and orthotic aids available with CRC.

Javed Ahmad Tak Chairman Humanity Welfare organization HELPline gave vote of thanks to the team of CRC and participants. He discussed the problems faced by the persons with disabilities at grass root level. He was of the view that standard Aids and appliances issued in favour of children with disabilities ensure their hassle free education. The sub standard wheelchairs issued in favour of students with disabilities hamper their education and make them to suffer unnecessarily, Tak added. He stressed on the stake holders of SC/ST/OBC board and women’s Development commission, the implementing agencies for NHFDC scheme to ensure the simple procedure for issuing loans under NHFDC scheme. The loans in favour of persons with disabilities should be hassle free without complicacies, he added. Tak said that now time has come to remove labeling and stereotypes linked with persons with disabilities. He sensitized participants about the laws, legislations and schemes available for the persons with disabilities in the country especially in J&K state. He suppressed on implementation of the Rights of persons with disabilities Act 2016. He thanked Director CRC for deputing a vibrant team which distributed the Aids and appliances and organized high level awareness programme at Zaiba Aapa Institute of Inclusive Education Bijbehara.
