High level Ability programme concludes World Disability Week in Srinagar on 11th Dec 2018

A high level Ability programme was organized on eve of concluding ceremony of World Disability Week 2018 at Auditorium Government Medical College Srinagar. The programme was organized by the Medical students group enrolled for MBBS programme. The Ability show was participated by the students with different disabilities of Zaiba Aapa Institute of Inclusive Education Bijbehara Anantnag and Shafaqat Special School Bemina. The children with disabilities participated in drawing competition. Dr Ruby Reeshi – HOD Hematology, Dr Fareeda HOD and different heads of departments participated in the programme.

Speaking on the occasion Chairman Humanity Welfare organization HELPline – Javed Ahmad Tak said that Persons with disabilities have some special needs that need to be fulfilled to include them in the society. The social structure is not disable friendly, thus persons with disabilities suffer thus, Tak Added. Describing the officials and policy makers insensitive towards the protection of rights of persons with disabilities Tak said that the policy makers need to be sensitive while formulating laws and policies. The recently decision of Passing Rights of Persons with disabilities – 2018 in J&K is historic in nature and Governor Administration has done it finally after wait of two years. Tak advocated for the formation of rules and the implementation of law in letter and spirit so that the persons with disabilities are empowered and given the environment of development on lines of empathy. Creating accessibility in the infrastructure is itself creating the awareness among masses. The creation of ramps, railings, elevators, tactile paths and tagging on the doors and entry points in buildings will itself aware people about the special needs of the persons with disabilities, Tak informed

Speaking on the event Mohammad Ayoub Rehabilitation therapist said that Shafaqat Special School has been instrumental in rehabilitating the children with developmental disabilities and Deaf and mute. He described the facilities available under different departments in the VMS Srinagar and requested the doctors to refer the persons in need of rehabilitation to Shafaqat rehabilitation Center.

The students with different disabilities of Zaiba Aapa Institute of inclusive education Bijbehara performed different cultural and capacity shows. The audience was very much emotional to see the talent of the children with disabilities. The children from Shafaqat special School presented a skit with Qawali and other cultural programme. Later on the children with disabilities were presented gifts by the organizers. Three role models were awarded on the occasion who despite Disabilities have been doing special contributions. These include Aamir Ahmad, a para cricketer, Mohammad Aslam Dabla Working as orderly in the SMHS hospital and Javed Ahmad Tak who is founder of Zaiba Aapa Institute of Inclusive Education and known as popular disability Activist in Jammu & Kashmir and proved himself as an effective change of disability issues maker in J&K.

Dr Rubeena Reeshi gave the vote of thanks. She said that Disability is no way any weakness but a strength that can be utilized to make society a lovely place to live in.
